plain good

When I am reading a book, whether wise or silly, it seems to me to be alive and talking to me.
--Jonathan Swift

this was sweet, funny, nerve wracking, uplifting...just plain good.

color

he said, "it's a another beautiful day."
she said, "it's a no color world out there."

then she went to the kitchen

and ate marvelous amazing color.

then he said, "you know last night when you said you were thankful we survived another winter? It's true. It is no small thing."

she said, "yes I know, but it sounded a little over the top, dramatic."

he replied, "the Indians counted off each year by surviving winter."

she uttered this statement when she prayed after family home evening. she almost laughed when the words spilled out; sounding so dramatic.

but, she meant it.

she needs color.

today's quote

“Labor with the hand is as honorable as labor with the head, but labor with the heart, when the heart is pure and true, is the noblest labor” of all.
– Karl G. Maeser as quoted by Bruce C. Hafen, The Dream Is Ours to Fulfill,
BYU Annual University Conference,
August 25th, 1992

her collection

were you to stumble upon
this small deposit
you may be tempted
to sweep it away

but,
because it was she who collected
odds and ends of nature
it patiently waits
for her
right
where
she
left
it

not to be moved

softly falling

spring snowfall
a surprise
flakes showering
wet cold lace
slowing pace
inside
and out

spring
rocky mountain
snowfall
astounding beauty
world washed clean
all sky a chalky gray
inherent serenity
hushed

once again elements
remind

i am needy

imagine

her delight when she got home from school yesterday and opened her email to find that she has earned a leadership and scholastic scholarship to LDSBC!

looking west from our driveway and seeing this ... another amazing beautiful day! (if you look close into the large pesky pine you will see afore mentioned lost aircraft)

the promise of roses!

so, so much to be thankful for. xox

today's quote

"The Lord doesn't expect us to work harder than we are able. He doesn't (nor should we) compare our efforts to those of others. Our Heavenly Father asks only that we do the best we can—that we work according to our full capacity, however great or small that may be."

Dieter F. Uchtdorf, "Two Principles for Any Economy," Ensign, Nov. 2009, 56

the age old problem

i said, "are you sure you don't want to fly that in a field?"

he said, "naw, it'll be ok."

his ever faithful mother is standing ready to retrieve
aircraft gone awry

he goes up

he comes down empty handed

meanwhile, brother is launching

they discuss their options

the brothers came with two flying toys
and will leave with one

their saintly mother
smiles
knowing what matters
(a lesson for the grammy)
one aircraft snuggly lodged in the evergreen
but two boys
still smiling

waiting for dad or the wind

deborah

she was a prophetess
seeking His will
saving His chosen

some call it intuition
inspiration
promptings

call it what you want
results are the same

when seeking to save
we will be lead
directed
taught
sustained

a holy woman
always
an instrument in His hand
His faithful love forever saves

a promise

she always wanted this pinkie ring
a promise made a long time ago

given to me when i was her age
loved and worn for many years

the gold came from her grandfather's
masonic ring
melted down
producing identical three

gifted to me by my darling
mother-in-law
lived in daily

now it's her turn
a promise kept
happy birthday dear laurel
happy birthday to you

passover

he would pass by
for this is a holy place
consecrated
to Him
to raise a righteous posterity
dedicated
set apart
by a patriarch

he would pass by
though no visible blood
but
make no mistake
precious blood has been shed
a perfect lamb
no broken bones

angel of death
pass
we covenant
absolute devotion
we choose to live

a plate

when i bought this plate
i was thinking of David
maybe it was the dog
he always wanted one
the horse
a real love
or the farming scene
his ideal

a plate depicting abundance

i reach for this plate a lot
it calls to me
and today
it really made me think of my boy
a blueberry pancake
his favorite
crowning other favorites
gladly eaten
savoring each bite

thinking of you

this morning

me...i am probably the happiest discontented person you have ever met

him...happiest discontented how does that work?

me...well, my glass is always half full, but i am always aware of my lacking

him...(pat) lacking

me...yea, i wake up with a song in my heart, (pause) but i can't go to Hawaii and not think about all of the people who will never get the chance. isn't that a little messed up?

him...hmmm

me...plus, i live with regret

him...what regret

me...i don't want to talk about it, but i probably have nineteen regrets

here is where we smile because where in the world did i come up with 19? suddenly sincere sounds a little ridiculous. he cares just the right amount.

last night

Tevye: Traditions, traditions. Without our traditions our lives would be as shaky as, as... as a fiddler on the roof!

final scene
a Patriarch being driven from his home
all belongings
cradled in one cart
three daughters
scattered to the wind
with aim

he is being followed
the very last to leave the stage
a fiddler
continues to play
sweet mournful notes

tradition
his compass

golf

last night we gathered to play
all ten of us
friends

but, the truth of the matter
we get together
to share
smiles
laughs
stories
politics
heart beats

they look like they mean business
what happens here amounts to
play
fun
jokes
silliness
respite
"what have we learned"
"it's all about the people"

butt-head
 king
it doesn't really matter

what we learn...
 it really is
all about the people
and these people
have shared
life paths
many long years
