a Canon story

i got a simple point and shoot camera at Christmastime from my sweetie
"now you can add photos to your blog"

but, i live with someone who is
very good,
with a pretty nice camera

these are a few examples of her mid-sentence helpful hints

"i think you cut the top of the head off because of LOST"

as you can see... not all head tops are missing
although i will miss Jack ever so much

here she is fiddling around with aperture
whatever in the heck that is

her big sister has a super-nice camera
and will stand on stools to get the perfect shot

(sorry ali, but i think you look cute, and maybe just a little annoyed)

i can get in the way

she mentors little sister
just yesterday she asked,
"is she taking pictures every day?"

how i would have loved this technology
in the early days
of mothering

and, a big helpful sister

the. end.

far above rubies

this woman
a queen
hair-net, gloves, apron
she listens
she is wise

just as precious
visit, smile, compare

we women are a marvel
we care
we try
we do
we nourish
and show up

what can compare
a good woman

Proverbs 31

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

(wish i knew who painted this)

holiness to the Lord

"A temple is literally a house of the Lord, a holy sanctuary in which sacred ceremonies and ordinances of the gospel are performed by and for the living and also in behalf of the dead. A place where the Lord may come, it is the most holy of any place of worship on the earth. Only the home can compare with the temple in sacredness."
--Bible Dictionary - Temple

play ball

During my 18 years I came to bat almost 10,000 times.  I struck out about 1,700 times and walked maybe 1,800 times.  You figure a ballplayer will average about 500 at bats a season.  That means I played seven years without ever hitting the ball.  ~Mickey Mantle, 1970

two of the men in my life are umps

I don't want to play golf.  When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it.
~Rogers Hornsby

no, that's not chew in his cheek
my guess... sunflower seeds

A hot dog at the ballgame beats roast beef at the Ritz.  ~Humphrey Bogart

a rare treat... ump a game together
father and son

Every hitter likes fastballs, just like everybody likes ice cream.  But you don't like it when someone's stuffing it into you by the gallon.  That's what it feels like when Nolan Ryan's thrown balls by you.  ~Reggie Jackson

a beautiful spring evening

When they start the game, they don't yell, "Work ball."  They say, "Play ball."
~Willie Stargell, 1981

but, in my heart i had to ask "why"

I'm convinced that every boy, in his heart, would rather steal second base than an automobile.  ~Tom Clark

jeers, complaints, chatter

There are three things in my life which I really love:  God, my family, and baseball.  The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit.  ~Al Gallagher, 1971

but, when true ump fans show up

If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base.  ~Dave Barry

well, those boys light up

Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world.  If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off.  ~Bill Veeck

yes, i'm lucky
to be related to these men
who love baseball

Ideally, the umpire should combine the integrity of a Supreme Court judge, the physical agility of an acrobat, the endurance of Job and the imperturbability of Buddha.
~"The Villains in Blue," Time magazine, 25 August 1961

for the brave

"There's only one thing I worry about and that's getting lonely. Because what I know, what I have seen with these two eyes, is that loneliness will creep up on anybody at any time. You go on doin what you been doin all your life, one day to another, and then the next thing you know there's nobody around. That's when you know you're old, when all your people start dying and your phone don't ring and you don't feel like puttin up a Christmas tree cause who's gon see it but you. And you don't bother to plant flowers in the spring cause you decide they're too much trouble to take care of. And even though you love to cook more than anything, you stop turnin on the stove. And you don't want to put on clothes because you ain't goin nowhere. And you tell the same stories over and over cause havin new stories means livin and you're not livin, you're sittin in a chair or lyin in a bed with the only thing goin on being what's in your head. And the thing that you never let yourself think about has happened: people have forgotten about you. Without you havin any idea your days have become like listening to a radio station when you're drivin way out in the country. You get so far off the map that static starts interruptin the music and it's a little bit frustrating but you stay with it trying to listen, and then there's more static than music and you might still hang on if you're interested, but then the music is gone and you have to turn the thing off. The silence is better than the noise."

45 minutes

just passing through
he will swim, run, and bike
a long long way

she will cheer
feed her babe

just passing through
on their way
to there

the unexpected visit
just passing through

"the little gem"

they are fishers now
as their father
as far back as we remember

each casting

boy's initials proudly displayed

they check balance
eye-ball for straight
then they cast
how about the knot
"do you want me to retie that for you?"

the action is slow
appreciative chuckles

they are friends
good men

his wife said...
"i will never say yes to a motorcycle
but,'s good"
he adores her
she supports him
they are happy

rainy then, rainy now

our mother
his wife
born March 1, l935
passed May 10, 2003

dad is so so lonely
he toughs it out
"what's up" i ask
"just waiting for the sun to go down"
he replies
his life reduced to this
work and missing

you said,
"look after him, he's not easy"
everyone tries
we come up short

there is no replacing
his one and only

would you visit him
maybe a dream

once he said,
"i look for her walking down the driveway,
she's not coming back"

you must have known
 a gaping hole
impossible to fill

all i wanted

seven years ago
she lay dying
"do i have anything you want"
there was something
connected with a long ago memory
a time
when she cried

she was all gussied up
going to a flapper party with a girlfriend
she had made a dress
planned and looked forward to
all ready to go
purse in hand

maybe i was seven or eight
then he came home
"you can't go, you belong home
taking care of these kids"
the party clothes came off
never to be seen again

but, the little chainmail bag
tucked away
it was her mother's
and now it's mine
satin lining
small round mirror in pocket
lace hankie

the purse, the memory
her disappointment
all mine
