this night after sundown

Streams of Mercy, J Kirk Richards

this night after sundown
being in agony
great drops of blood
"not my will, but thine be done."

this night after sundown
they will come
"Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man
 with a kiss?"

this night after sundown
"but this is your hour,
and the power of darkness."
over and over
"mocked him, and smote him."

this night after sundown
turning to watch Peter
"woman, I know him not"
the cock will crow
"and Peter remembered"

and i will weep as he wept bitterly
for i have known weakness
i have been scared
i have disappointed

this night after sundown
i will kneel knowing HE LIVES!
Peter repented going forward
ever an example of faith
never failing

Luke 22:32--But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou are converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

1. Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

2. Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Hither by Thy help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it;
Seal it for Thy courts above.

3. Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it;
Seal it for Thy courts above.

4. O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it;
Seal it for Thy courts above.

Robert Robinson penned the words at age 22 in the year 1757.

be of good cheer

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.  John 16:33

The unimaginable agony of Gethsemane was about to descend upon Jesus; Judas’ betrayal was imminent. Then would come Jesus’ arrest and arraignment; the scattering of the Twelve like sheep; the awful scourging of the Savior; the unjust trial; the mob’s shrill cry for Barabbas instead of Jesus; and then the awful crucifixion on Calvary. What was there to be cheerful about? Just what Jesus said: He had overcome the world! The atonement was about to be a reality. The resurrection of all mankind was assured. Death was to be done away with—Satan had failed to stop the atonement. [But a Few Days (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1983), 4] Elder Neil A. Maxwell

then it was Thursday
tomorrow He will be crucified
he has gathered his friends
his disciples
trusted ones

they are troubled
worried
care worn

He comforts them
He offers peace
He means what he says
"be of good cheer"

so i will
so i will
dear brother
perfect example
trusted friend
i will

Wherefore, be of good cheer, and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you, and will stand by you; and ye shall bear record of me, even Jesus Christ, that I am the Son of the living God, that I was, that I am, and that I am to come. [D&C 68:6]

blind piggers (p. 208) owners of speakeasies

borrasca-poor (p. 214) the opposite of bonanza-a bust. If you found borrasca, you had a worthless claim.

Hoovered (p. 201) a common expression in the early 1930s and means to be laid off. Hoover hotels were fleabags. The expression comes from Herbert Hoover, who was President when the Great Depression started.

leather bellies (p. 200 & 269) tough guys, sort of like "hard heads" but lower down. Perhaps it has to do with the amount of rotgut they could consume, but that’s just a guess.

stump-knocker (p. 171) a traveling preacher.

tap ‘er light (p. 172) It literally means, "take it easy" or "be careful and have a good day." It comes from the practice of setting explosives in the mines. They had to pack in certain types of explosive charges by carefully tapping them in with a hammer.

I found these expressions of speech most charming.

epiphany from m

if you are taking statements...

And even if you're not -I wanted to share my week with you because  I feel bad about whining yesterday, and I think I had a sort of epiphany today that I'm excited about!

  • Some days are good and some are not - just like before this challenge.
  • Fries and chips and pasta do NOT compensate for no sweets and soda.  That's a good thing!
  • Already, in two weeks time I can see just how dependent I have become to consuming.  Eating, drinking, buying, computer/blogging (consuming images and ideas, quickly and half-heartedly).  I think one of the best things I can learn from this challenge is how to just NOT consume something.   Not have a three o' clock treat and not have something in it's place, either.  Not nurse a diet coke while doing other things.  Not buy shoes (I say this, because I remember when I did Lent I seemed to compensate my lack of treats with purchases).  Maybe after a while I can start being patient and find satisfaction in the doing of things.  Really, I have been such a slug, so so unhealthy. I haven't put a lot of focus in learning or growing my talents or rearing my family or keeping house.
I think I will learn a lot with this whole thing.  I act like a big baby a lot of the time, but that's okay.  I'll grow up eventually, because I AM NOT QUITTING THIS!  :)

Thanks,
Love you,
M

this makes a lot of sense to me

for the record

the gamers have successfully completed one week...

melissa...They say if you can make it past day three, you can easily make it a hundred more...  really?
I think my headache is finally going.  YAY!
Hope you all are doing well  :)

david...I had a challenging day... A piece of $200 cherry pie was calling my name. I love cherry pie.

anna...Try sweetening your food with just mashed raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries.  Banning syrup?  I assumed.  I'm having a hard time not eating the Ukrainian chocolate my host mom just sent me!

becky...Just in the middle of making chocolate chip oatmeal cookies!  They look good, smell good, even have to touch them- Justin says they taste good-BUT doesnt feel as good as feeling like you have a little control and self discipline!  Couple sugar headaches- but not too hard of a week- nice to think I can beat the Sug addiction!  I know from doing this before- soon we will feel lots of extra energy! I can't remember how long it will be though-

katie...I was so saturated at the beginning of the week that I didn't actually miss the sugar until about Thursday. I intended to quit already on Thursday, but my friend Julie talked me off the ledge. I remain.

melissa...

No Sweets/Caffeine Haiku (my statement)

Headache is gone (phew!)
But now I'm to live, daily,
With constant longing?
:)

becky...her kids, "would you really take $200 from dave?"

anna...My first week has been composed of a combination of threatening cravings, overcome with spurts of confidence, simply to be followed by minutes of [debating] just staring at the Ukrainian chocolate my host mom sent to me, which arrived this week.  If I can give up that divine Ukrainian chocolate to the rest of my family now, I can give up the rest of America's mediocre sweets to those who are able to care less for their health and/or pride.

alison...My week was challenging. I was grumpy and had a dull headache for a couple of days. I had moments where I was glad I signed on for the challenge and others where I wasn't. It's good to get the first week behind me!

sam/mellissa's husband..."i offered her $200 to quit." she's been a little grumpy.

cristie...amen.

danny...Breakfast?  It was delicious - green drink...

liz...i keep dreaming i am eating forbidden food!

david...Also, is Gram Crackers and milk ok? and....

Ali is none to happy about joining this challenge.

ali's little lydia...none to happy either.
